Timber
Creek heading back to Katherine… 12th of June…
We again made a point of stopping here on
our way back as missed out on seeing the museum last time…..everyone raved
about it. So we did it. We actually had to come back after we checked
in at the caravan park as there was just too much to read!
What an amazing array of information.
It is all sitting there, under the careful eye of the caretaker, in the
open air original police station. I
won’t go into detail about what we learnt here but let me just say the stamina
and endurance of people – indigenous and non indigenous - continues to astound
me.
Something about jail cells...we all have to stand inside and have our pics taken. These are actually just the gates off the original cells. They built them too heavy and one day a prisoner pushed it open as the police man was opening it, and it fell on him and killed him!
It was stinking hot yesterday and the old police station doesn’t have a hell of a lot of ventilation so after an hour or so in here we made a bee line for Hickeys springs again…ahhh so refreshing! We maneuvered Mama down the tricky path as she really had to see this…she was pleased she did. Back to camp for another feed on our Silver Cobbler catch…that’s three meals in two days…then off to bed.
Oh, here’s probably a good place to add about the generosity of people you meet. I got friendly with the old fella in Liquor Land at Coles and he bought me in a stack of Barramundi! How awesome is that!!!! Just gave it to me…another reason why I love Kununurra. Don’t love the liquor laws though. No purchasing of alcohol till after 2pm and then it is one slab of beer or one bottle of spirits. Doesn’t stop anybody from drinking. They just start on light beer until two and then get stuck into it after then.
Anyway, onwards to Katherine we head…..
